"Where did *this* come from?" Mike asked, picking up the strange stone from the floor. "I don't know," Mrs. Farber said. Really, though, she didn't care. What *she* wanted answered was how that boy Jon had gotten into her house and why he would make up a story about a horse trashing her basement. She began to regret her decision to let the kid off with only a warning. Breaking and entering, not to mention vandalism, were definitely crimes. What if the boy did it to someone else? She could have put a stop to his maliciousness right here and now, but she didn't. Mike tried to think about why he came to the Farber house, but he drew a blank.
