Jon figured that if he could backtrack through Mr. Reynolds' life, he could find out when he started to have protection against magic. The whole situation seemed ludicrous to Jon. That a teacher in *his* school, not to mention that he was Jon's history teacher, would be protected against something that Jon didn't even believe in (until the stone showed up, that is). Jon held the stone in his hand and said "I wish to know ..."
