One thing occurred to me after the "language" episode: If Lucas said the words to Cass and Cass saw fit to do that trick in her class, John might become aware of something odd about Cass... ;) Mind, I'm NOT going to have it happen without the full agreement of you two, but it MIGHT be a way for John to become aware of the "other" nakama - IF such a thing is even in the agenda.
