Inside the school's main office, a machine whirred to life, and began making phone calls.
"This is an automated message from Lake Point High School. Your child, (insert name here), was not in class the morning."
The calls, made by the school's computerized attendance system, went out to a variety of numbers. For whatever reason, there was a longer than normal list that day.
