A Change in Class

"Mmm," the teacher huffed as Gary dashed into class. "Nearly late there, Gary." Mr. Thompson closed the door and locked it from the inside to the great despair of a student only slightly later than Gary himself. He shrugged at the boy outside, whose crestfallen expression indicated he really did *not* want to go to the principal's office. Gary sighed with relief, and sat down in his usual seat. He frowned when he realized that Cat wasn't sitting in front of him, as usual. Instead, she was near the back of the classroom, surrounded by other girls and chatting as she fixed her hair using her compact. In front of Gary sat Steve Farber, a womanizing jerk that Gary typically got along alright with. He didn't often talk to Steve, but he tolerated him better than Jon did. Steve nodded toward the locked door, looking at Gary with a knowing expression. "You dating Cat's younger sister now, bro?" He grinned. "That mean the Kitty's now available?" "No, Steve," Gary said boredly, "we're not dating. She just has a crush on me." Steve raised his eyebrows, leaning forward. "Really?" "Yeah, apparently, if you believe Cat, anyway." Gary mentally slapped himself. Steve was the male equivalent of Sarah McMillan, after all. Sarah, the most popular girl at school, was a notorious gossip. And so was Steve. Gary should've just brushed it off. He kind of liked the attention, though. "Cat's sister," Steve repeated. "She's got a crush on you?" Gary rolled his eyes. At this point, better to just roll with the punches than fight it. "Yeah, Steve, Cat's sister has a crush on me. But again, we're not dating. Capiche?" Steve nodded, making a face that said, "I got you man. But we're definitely gonna talk more about this later." Then he turned back around just before their teacher, Mr. English, who was ironically a math teacher, snapped at them. Instead, Mr. English snapped at Cat. "Catherine Gibson!" he shouted. "Stop your blathering and pay attention! All of you!" Gary hadn't realized how loud the room had been before Cat's clique went silent. "Damn," he muttered. "She really is acting girly."
