The difference

While lots of other literature has children undergoing horrible things, the difference is that in it the horrible things are being presented *as horrible things*. You're not supposed to be aroused by them--you're supposed to think of them as horrible. You can have a story that has kids getting maimed by land mines. But you won't have a story which is all about how cool it is to get kids maimed by land mines.
