"You know, sometimes I think my grandfather isn't really dead," Jon told Karyn. "Why do you say that?" Jon pointed at the stone, still lying on his desk. "That's why. He had the stone. It's probably the most powerful item in the world. I mean, if *you* were dying and had the stone, wouldn't you use it to stay alive or something?" "Maybe he didn't know he was gonna die," Karyn suggested. "No. He died from cancer. That doesn't just happen overnight." Jon sighed, then said "I wish he was still alive." Then, suddenly, a bright light shot out from the stone, making Karyn and Jon turn their heads. When it dissipated, they looked back, with stunned eyes. "What *happened*?" they yelled simultaneously. "It granted your wish, Jon. And you weren't even *holding* it. Jon? Are you listening to me?" Jon was listening. But he was too busy trying to figure out what was happening to answer Karyn. After a few minutes of stunned silence, Jon said "I made a wish before you came here. It was a stupid wish. I was just fooling around. It shouldn't have done anything." "What, Jon? What did you wish for?" "I wished that the stone could grant wishes. It shouldn't have done anything, because the stone can *already* grant wishes." "Jon, don't you see what you did?" Jon shook his head. "You made it so *any* wish that is made is granted by the stone. You just made the stone more dangerous. People's wishes will come true whether they're touching the stone or not." ------ They were so wrapped up in their discussion of what happened with the stone that they forgot about Jon's wish about his grandfather ...
