The Cloud: Stephanie is Supposed to Be a Boy and the Mayor's Son

Kyla moved to the other side of the hall, pulling Nadine with her, towards the row of lockers, and watched as the two they spotted did the same. "Yeah, I think they're looking at us." "I want to know why," Nadine said, walking through the crowd of people who were either loitering in the hall talking with friends, or heading to class, all the way to Jon and Stephanie. Kyla trailed behind, but eventually caught up with them too. "Why the hell are you looking at us like that?" Nadine demanded. "Wow, you really _are_ different, aren't you? A lot better than that stuck up bitch you were before," Stephanie said. "That's what _I_ said," Nadine said. She squinted. "Wait a minute, I know you. When Kyla said Stephanie Wright, I didn't make the connection, but ..." "But what?" Stephanie asked. "You're supposed to be Kevin Wright ... the mayor's son." "What are you saying? That I'm supposed to be a ... boy?" Stephanie asked, astonished. "Yeah, and a staunch Republican too. Really all conservative and pro-business and shit," Nadine said. "Handsome too, but totally a major turn-off otherwise. Your father's the same way, apparently. For some reason, people love him for it. He's trying to fix Lake Point, but I don't think it _needs_ to be fixed. I like it just the way it is. The way it's supposed to be, anyway." Stephanie was shocked about that too. Her father was a drunk who didn't care about anyone but himself. Him? As mayor of Lake Point? That sounded ludicrous. About as much as Stephanie having supposed to be a boy, and a conservative one at that. What the fuck was going on around here?
