No not overboard. It's just the main strength of Melanie's story is self discovery of the human condition. I would think her first dreams should be normal and personal ones made up from her own memories and thoughts. Just my feeling on it, it feels a bit of a missed oportunity to understand more of Melanie with the gods going matrix on her.
