Gretchen Wilson was working in her garden. It was the only thing that gave her joy, save baking cookies and babysitting some of the local children. She had grown apart with her own family, to the point her grandchildren never came to visit. It was always vague promises from her daughter that never materialized. She saw the Black girl walking away from the Madison house, and giving a wide berth to that other blond girl, who didn't live around here, but often walked through.
