In the mother branch the stepmother and dad come in. Then there's only enough time for Jon/Janine to turn around--maybe a few seconds--before the sister branch starts. Then Michelle asks where Mom and Dad are. If the stepmother and dad were just a few seconds ahead of her, I doubt she would have asked that.
