I am thinking they try to make a wish such as "While I am in this form, I wish to be able to change into a humanoid form" (Which fails due to the sphinx's \#1 wish)
That leads to a dream where the sphinx and Jon meet each other? (And possible more of a shade of the sphinx who can't answer to many questions etc)
