Unfortunately, he forgot to bring his phone with him. The device remained on a table at McDonald's. The Palimpsest app was still open on its screen when a text message from "Dad" appeared. Until now, Jon and his siblings had been raised by single mothers. Jon's original father was still alive but pretty much out of his life now. Athena was sitting in McDonalds, having bought a a pile of burgers off the dollar menu. Athena had not become the best version of herself....she'd become the worst. When she spotted the kid leaving behind his phone, and not coming back, she headed over to it, grabbing it. The phone hadn't locked yet, and she was smart enough to know that she had to keep using it or it would lock. It was much fancier than her phone. She did so, hurrying out, still occasionally swiping. Once outside of easy sight, she looked through the phone...hoping for maybe a mobile pay account hooked in, or something else. There was someone two doors down from her who knew all that tech stuff. He could probably unlock it for her, maybe even tell her how much she could get for it. Jon didn't know what was on his phone, but soon either Athena, or whoever she went to with the phone would very soon. It wasn't just the app, which he believed no one but him could see...Tiffany had been sending him pictures, and even though they were supposed to have been automatically deleted, they were still in the phone's memory.

Thanks for picking up where I left off with the phone! I may have considered having the phone being taken by someone else, but I definitely did not explore that possibility in depth. You make me wonder if Athena's new criminal tendencies were inherited from the girl she replaced - or if they're a carryover from Betty Lou Drucker who might have been a petty thief in her teens. I've had my phone stolen, and you've given some idea of what might have happened to it! Shudder!

Well, I did some googling, not exactly extensive research. It depends on how sophisticated your thief is. Athena isn't....she just knows enough to get to it before it locks. They'll turn off mobile and wifi so you can't find it or wipe it. Sometimes they'll put it in a signal blocking pouch if they can't yet turn it off. It is easy enough to force it to wipe and then repurpose it. But if there is someone more savvy, they can do other things...not everyone protects their phone well.
